Miss Whiplash UK

According to Robert Powell at Yahoo’s UK Finance page, the UK has been dubbed the ‘European capital of whiplash’ by the Association of British Insurers after research showed that nearly 1,200 insurance claims for whiplash are made every day.

This figure is six times higher than those for people who claim for workplace injuries and is the equivalent of one in every 140 people in the UK making a claim for the neck ailment every year.

The additional claim pay outs cost the industry nearly £2 billion every year, pushing up the cost of car insurance policies for honest motorists by around 20% or £74 a time.

The NHS spends around £8 million every year treating this stretching and straining of the soft tissue of the neck, which is normally caused by being hit from behind by another vehicle.

Southend Airshow

vulcan bomber at southend airportReally looking forward to the airshow this year since I now have a balcony that looks out towards the Pier.

Even if some of the bigger jet fighters will not be making an appearance, I’m hoping for a really good view of the wonderful Red Arrows and my long-time favourite, the Vulcan bomber – I’m not sure if this is the same aircraft as the one at Southend Airport, which my friend, Peter, has helped to restore to its former glory.

The show, which is one of Europe’s largest free airshows, is sponsored by Westcliff Casino and usually takes place over the May Whitsun bank holiday. For this 26th year, however, it will take place on the Saturday and Sunday and we are promised a huge range of ground entertainment from the RAF, Army, Navy and Royal Marine Town Shows, trade stands, rides, simulators, giant inflatables and a packed arena programme of entertainment, to keep all of the family amused all day long.

BBC Essex will again be bringing you Radio Airshow on 1530MW, as well as providing the live commentary along the seafront, and Southend Radio will be providing live entertainment both days with music Roadshows.

I am indebted to VisitSouthend.co.uk for the full display programme.
